Franciscan Action Network Welcomes the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act
Washington, D.C. – Franciscan Action Network (FAN), which brings the peacemaking of St Francis of Assisi to public policy, welcomes the Senate passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and encourages the House to quickly pass it so it can be signed into law. We are grateful to all the Senators who voted for this legislation.
“On the morning of June 23rd, we were deeply dismayed by the SCOTUS decision in the New York case, fearing the result would mean many more guns on the streets. Then late that night, the Senate finally passed gun violence prevention legislation with a bi-partisan vote, lifting our hearts and our hopes,” said Sr. Maria Orlandini, FAN Director of Advocacy. “While it is a good start, the bill falls far short of what is needed to stem the tide of gun violence deaths and injuries, but it breaks a decades-long deadlock of inaction and includes significant measures. We urge the House to pass the bill immediately and move it to the President’s desk to be signed into law. Franciscans will continue to pray and act for passage of meaningful, common sense gun violence prevention measures that assure greater safety for our nation’s children and families.”
As a faith based organization with peacemaking as one of its primary values, FAN has advocated for gun violence prevention for many years. Following mass shooting after mass shooting, and with daily gun violence across the United States, Franciscans have prayed and advocated for passage of meaningful gun safety legislation, joining other faith organizations and large secular organizations in pressuring Congress to act. Recently, FAN staff members attended a Giffords Organization press conference, and then a March for Our Lives large rally in Washington, DC. (Photo)
