Washington, D.C. – Franciscan Action Network (FAN) is alarmed and dismayed by the inhumane treatment of Haitian migrants seeking refuge from deplorable conditions in Haiti. Our faith admonitions to “welcome the stranger,” “feed the hungry,” and “love your neighbor,” demand that we call on the Biden administration to stop Title 42 expulsions of thousands of Haitians to the poorest country in the western hemisphere plagued by food insecurity, political turmoil, and devastation wrought by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which has destroyed homes, schools, churches, and whole villages.
“The administration must terminate Title 42, stop deportation flights, and investigate the cruel treatment of Haitians by federal border patrol agents at Del Rio” said FAN Associate Director, Sr. Marie Lucey, OSF. “FAN acknowledges the challenges of thousands of asylum seekers and refugees at the southern border, but this country is not small, weak, and helpless. We have the capacity to offer safe haven to refugees, end inhumane policies and actions, and reform our immigration system. Do we have the will? We pray and work for a change in direction by this administration.”
