Calls on Senate to Act Immediately

WASHINGTON, DC — The Franciscan Action Network (FAN) applauds the House passage of the House Amendment to the Senate Amendment to H.R. 5746, the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and urges the Senate to pass the bill immediately.

“As Franciscans and Franciscan-hearted individuals, we recognize each person as a gift from God and must act to uphold each human being’s dignity and worth. As Pope Francis calls us to ‘meddle in politics,’ we interpret this concept as a requirement that all Americans must have an equal say in the public square,” said Jason Miller, FAN’s Director of Campaigns and Development and the WISC Working Group Co-Chair, Faithful Democracy coalition. “This is especially true for people of color who have been historically disenfranchised at the ballot box and are once again being targeted as voter suppression bills are being introduced and passed throughout statehouses nationwide.”

Having an equal say means that all Americans must have equal access to the vote. To combat disenfranchisement, the Senate must no longer delay passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and pass the bill immediately––even if that requires a rules change.
