Franciscans Applaud House Passage of Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019

FAN Urges Senate to take up the issue immediately

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, December 6, 2019, the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019 (H.R.4) passed the House with a 228-187 vote. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) was the sole Republican to vote in support of the legislation.

Upon hearing the news, Patrick Carolan, Executive Director of the Franciscan Action Network had this to say: “As Franciscans, our Christian faith teaches us that we must recognize each person as a gift from God. We must emphasize the importance of the essential humanity and dignity of each person. Pope Francis has called on us to “meddle in politics” and we interpret this concept as a requirement that all Americans must have an equal say in the public square. We applaud the House passage of HR4 and we call on the Senate to immediately take up the Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure that all Americans have equal access at the ballot box.”
