On June 16, the Franciscan Action Network (FAN) hosted our annual online benefit, “Dignity First: Nourishing Lives, Transforming Communities.” The program explored the rich Franciscan heritage of caring for our sisters and brothers in need.
This year’s program featured the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. For nearly a century, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has served the local community, responding to hunger, poverty, and social isolation by providing meals, fresh produce, clothing, and supportive services. At FAN, we complement their direct service, which affirms the dignity of each person, by advocating for laws and public policies that uphold human dignity.

‘As the Father sees in every person the features of his Son, so we must accept all people as a gift of the Lord…striving to create conditions of life worthy of people redeemed by Christ’ (Secular Franciscan Rule).
In a world marked by widening wealth gaps, food insecurity, housing instability, climate disasters, wars, and the mass deportation of immigrants, human dignity is too often denied. FAN staff and friends visited the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, serving guests and learning from them how FAN’s advocacy can help create conditions of life worthy of all God’s children. FAN also made a financial contribution to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen to support their vital work.
