The following is a press release sent by Franciscan Action Network calling on Congress to bring the issue of Immigration Reform to a vote in the House.
Immigration Reform; Peacemaking
Franciscan Action Network addresses torture issues through participation in the Catholic Leadership group of the National Religious Coalition Against Torture (NRCAT), as well as immigration issues. Here is a new report on immigration detention which connects these issues.
As the House continues to stall progress toward immigration reform, one bill that has passed the House Judiciary Committee is getting more attention – the Strengthen And Fortify Enforcement Act “SAFE Act” (H.R. 2278). This very dangerous bill would encourage racial profiling, eliminate the Administration’s protection of DREAMers, expand immigration detention, criminalize overstaying a visa, and harm both community safety and vulnerable populations.
