Franciscans Decry Administration’s Decision to end Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador

Washington, D.C. - The Franciscan Action Network condemns the administration’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of El Salvador effective September 9, 2019.  TPS protects individuals and families who would otherwise be in harm’s way in their countries of origin, which are recovering from catastrophic events such as natural disaster, war, famine, or disease. More than 200,000 Salvadorans have built lives here and dread that they will have to choose between leaving children in the U.S. or taking them to a dangerous country they have never seen.  As people of faith we believe in the dignity of human life and denounce any decision to return people to conditions where their lives will be immediately put in danger.

“We cannot sit idly by while our sisters and brothers are returned to the very conditions that forced them from their homes,” states Sr. Maria Orlandini, OSF, FAN Director of Advocacy. “These actions run counter not only to our faith principles, but to humanitarian concerns and to America’s proclaimed commitment to ‘liberty and justice for all. Congress must now act to protect these hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans, many of whom only know the United States as their home.’”

El Salvador’s murder rate is one of the highest in the world. In the 17 years since the original TPS designation was offered, officials from different administrations have determined conditions in El Salvador hadn't improved enough for migrants with TPS to return. Instead of returning people to violence and crime, we urge Congress to work to provide an opportunity for TPS holders to apply to become permanent US residents.
