Franciscans Join Other Faith Leaders in Opposing Senate Tax Bill

Say the bill ignores Christian values

Washington, D.C. - Twelve national faith leaders were arrested today for nonviolent civil disobedience in response to the proposed tax bill moving through the Senate. This action served to call on legislators to remember the moral commitments of their faith traditions when proposing and voting on legislation. The arrestees represented many denominations and made virtuous and theological arguments, more than political ones, against these tax bills. Demonstrating great moral character, they gathered in the Hart Senate Office building, publicly praying and reading from over 2,000 passages from the bible which refer to the necessity to protect and defend the poor.

“Our tax policies are a statement on the moral compass of our nation.  As such, it should reflect our highest calling to take care of the most vulnerable and support a just, equitable society.” said Patrick Carolan, executive director of the Franciscan Action Network. “The 13th century theologian and Franciscan St. Bonaventure tells us, how we choose and what we choose makes a difference – first in what we become by our choices and second in what the world becomes by our choices. As a part of the Franciscan family and a Christian I lead with my faith, Catholic social teaching, and specifically Franciscan spirituality, which are all built on tenets of social, environmental, and economic justice. This current tax bill chooses to ignore these Christian moral values.”

Our nation's fiscal morality is lately being driven by politics, partisan pressure, and the relentless demands of the wealthiest political donors. We must continue to remind members of Congress that our faith demands us to give priority to a level of compassion and justice for the poor.
