Franciscans Distraught Over Rumors of DACA Termination

Deporting people brought as children not following the Gospel

Washington, D.C.-The Franciscan Action Network is saddened by news reports indicating the President will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as soon as today. This puts more than 800,000 young people at risk of deportation.

"Many young 'Dreamers' do not remember the country of their birth or even speak the language--they have built a life in the United States," said Franciscan Action Network Executive Director Patrick Carolan. "They are Americans and to take away their protected status, leave them at risk for deportation, and tear families apart is cruel and unusual punishment when they had no say in the matter."

FAN has stood in solidarity with affiliated groups who have been standing vigil in front of the White House since August 15th and will continue to stand with all of our immigrant sisters and brothers. We implore the Trump Administration to do the same.

"As people of faith we must 'Welcome the Stranger' and follow the example of Pope Francis who stands in support of immigrants," Carolan said. "To do otherwise not only goes against our values as a nation of immigrants, it goes against our values as Christians."

Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus, and the example of Saints Francis and Clare, the Franciscan Action Network (FAN) is a collective Franciscan voice seeking to transform United States public policy related to peace making, care for creation, poverty, and human rights. For more information:
