Since 2014, FAN has hosted an annual celebration in honor of Theodore Cardinal McCarrick. The Cardinal served as Archbishop of Washington from 2001 to 2006, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. Throughout his career, McCarrick has been known as an advocate for social justice, once saying, "[T]he Church cannot be authentic unless it takes care of the poor, the newcomers, the needy" It is this true passion for the marginalized that inspired FAN to name this honorarium after him.

The award is presented annually to a social justice advocate who, while not a professed Franciscan, embodies the spirit of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi.

Past recipients of the award include: advocate for immigration, Eliseo Medina, champion of the environment and Executive Director of GreenFaith, Rev. Fletcher Harper and Director of the Center for Earth Ethics, Karenna Gore.

This year, FAN will bestow the honor of this award to the staff of Unity Productions Foundation for their dedication to helping educate people about the realities of Islam through films.
