Franciscan Action Network is coordinating the American leg of the Global Catholic Climate Movement's Hunger Fast. If your health permits you to join the American Hunger Fast on March 16, 2015 please fill in your information. Signing up for the U.S. fast will automatically sign you up for the Global Catholic Climate Movement fast.
Beginning Lent (February 18 – April 2) 2015, the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM) would like to urge Catholics around the world to pray and fast in solidarity with those who are most affected by the changing global climate. The traditional fast on Ash Wednesday (February 18) will commence the global effort and we ask that Catholics in every country include in their daily prayers our troubled Earth and especially those who are affected most by its violent climate shifts; the poor and those who live along coastal communities. Each subsequent day of Lent, will be assigned to a different country.
What else can you do to be involved in this effort?
- Each country will have a leader tasked with organizing others to fast and pray for environmental justice. As a leader, you are the point person for your country. First, you choose a date for your country to fast then start mobilizing Catholic organizations and individuals to join in the fast on that date. The GCCM has an ongoing database of people who have agreed to join the fast – we will send you a list of names and emails for your country.
- As Catholics, we are called to live the joy of the Gospel and follow the teachings of the Bible. The OurVoices campaign has been developed as an Inter-faith petition to show leaders of the world a concrete example of people of faith joining their voices together on this issue. Please sign the OurVoices petition and show your love and concern for the planet we all share.
- Download and print the flier explaining the fast, listed below, and spread the word to family, friends and co-workers.
- Download and print the 2015 Lenten Carbon Fast Calendar put together by Interfaith Power and Light Of Greater Washington for a daily guide to living more in right relationship with Sister mother Earth.
As the Holy Father has demonstrated his care for all of God’s creation, now we as Catholics need to follow his courageous example and pray this fast will be the start of a global shift in the way we respond to climate crises.
