The May 1st FAN Climate Campaign Webinar, introduced us to the connection between the environment and the food we eat, from a Franciscan perspective.
Francesca Wigle, TSSF, shared the opening prayer. Written by Gary Paul Nabhan, OEF, the prayer called us to know where our food comes from, who grew it, who cut it and who prepared it. “When you know where your food comes from you can give something back to those lands and waters, that rural culture” and be in relationship with the earth.
Stacey Antine, OFS, founder of HealthBarn USA, and a registered dietitian, was one of the presenters. She shared how her Franciscan vocation had led her to take action to reach out to children (and grown-ups, too!) to help them begin to learn how to grow their own fruits and veggies and make the best choices at the supermarket or in a restaurant, and how to prepare and cook what nature provided, while having fun. The Health Barn now offers summer camps as well as classes throughout the year. The slides we saw were very encouraging and we could see that a healthy relationship between the children and the earth was being nurtured. Food was no longer just a processed item in a plastic container. It was a gift from the earth and they learned how to prepare and enjoy a meal with it. Brother John Kerr, TOR, reviewed some of what we have been sharing and some of the actions we have been taking over the course of the webinars.
Rhett Engelking, OFS, shared about the new focus of our webinars, on the way we grow food and how what we eat affects everyone on the planet. He emphasized that over the next 5 or 6 months (in our monthly webinars) we will learn more about moving from information to action.
Kelly Moltzen, MPH, RD was the next presenter. She is the nutrition Coordinator and Healthy Schools NY Program Coordinator at Bronx Health REACH. She shared photos of her work in the Bronx. Her slides included: Food Insecurity in the U.S. and the Industrial Food Swamps, Improving the School Food Environment, a Social Marketing Campaign, the Effects of starting a school garden in the Bronx, Urban Agriculture, Food Justice Education, Farm visits, and What Can We Do? The program has been very successful and it was very encouraging to see the progress towards better health due to these programs in the Bronx!
