All eyes are now on the critical situation in Syria, and in September legislators in D.C. must also deal with the budget, the deficit and other issues. The timeline for immigration reform may be pushed back to November or December. It is important to keep the need for immigration reform with a path to citizenship before members of the House of Representatives, urging a bill in 2013 because attention will shift to primaries and elections in 2014. There was energetic activity in Districts during the August recess. Pressure needs to continue on both local and national levels. Both Justice for Immigrants (JFI) and Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC) urge ongoing action.
JFI activities include special Masses and pilgrimages taking place in a number of cities. Please check this list which will be continuously updated and consider spreading the word about participation. Members of the core committee in D.C. continue to visit congressional offices on Capitol Hill, and will encourage local members in a given District to follow-up with a phone call to the Representative following a Hill visit. Some Representatives continue to hold town meetings in their District. Attending meetings and calling for immigration reform with a path to citizenship is very important.
IIC activities include calls to Representatives. A call-in number to Congress is posted on the home page of the IIC website. Calls to Representatives are urged during the 40 days of prayer, fast, and action initiative. FastAction was launched on September 9 with a tele-conference. As of that date over 6,000 people had made the commitment. The hope is for 10,000 commitments, so although this is week two, it is not too late to commit. God’s time has no calendar!
We find ourselves at a pivotal moment in the movement for immigration reform. As people of faith, we believe that we must engage our communities in prayerful action in solidarity with those who suffer because of our broken immigration policies and who will be impacted by both just and unjust reforms being considered by policy makers. Please join us and ask your family, friends, and communities to commit to prayer, fasting and advocacy for comprehensive immigration reform!
