Repeal of the Clean Power Plan Threatens Our Common Future

Franciscans will fight to defend critical protections for our planet

Washington D.C. - President Trump is set to sign an executive order on Tuesday that will begin to undo the Clean Power Plan (CPP), an Obama-era regulation designed to reduce carbon pollution from power plants. It contained the first-ever national standards on carbon pollution, and would have been a huge step in addressing the effects of climate change, while catalyzing a shift towards cleaner energy without driving up the cost of energy. The dismantling of the Clean Power Plan puts people and the planet at risk and the Franciscan Action Network stands strong against it.

This move and others President Trump has made recently, such as approving the Keystone and Dakota Access Pipelines, make it clear that the Trump Administration does not care about climate change or protecting frontline communities. Carbon pollution is directly linked to climate change and the administration is deliberately attempting to obscure this truth. Low-income communities, indigenous communities, and communities of color are most likely to experience the full impact of resource pollution and reduced human health. By cutting the Clean Power Plan, the administration is demonstrating that corporate polluters are more important than the health and prosperity of our common home.

Patrick Carolan, Executive Director of the Franciscan Action Network, said "Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si that our sisters and brothers in the Global South are most affected by the giant polluters in the first world. We have a moral responsibility to care for our neighbors, across the street and across the world. By eliminating the Clean Power Plan the administration is showing that they value profits over human beings, many of whom are suffering now from our selfish decisions."

The Franciscan Action Network will continue to push back against all actions from this administration that threaten the well-being of frontline communities and all of God's creation, as this executive order does so egregiously.

Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus, and the example of Saints Francis and Clare, the Franciscan Action Network (FAN) is a collective Franciscan voice seeking to transform United States public policy related to peace making, care for creation, poverty, and human rights. For more information:
