Franciscans Pleased with De-nuclearization Agreement in Korea
Washington, DC - Yesterday’s announcement from the Korean Summit of an agreement between the United States and North Korea to denuclearize and end military exercises came as a good news to the Franciscan Action Network (FAN).
“Franciscans hold a deep commitment to peace and we believe peace requires encounter,” said Franciscan Action Network executive director, Patrick Carolan. “Next year is the 800th anniversary of the meeting between St. Francis of Assisi and the Sultan al-Kamil of Egypt in Damietta, which marked a major turning point during the crusades. We applaud President Trump and Chairman Kim for making a similar effort, having the courage to take these important steps toward peace.”
In his 2017 message for World Day of Peace, Pope Francis challenged us to “dedicate ourselves prayerfully and actively to banishing violence from our hearts, words and deeds, and to becoming nonviolent people and to building nonviolent communities.” We commend President Trump and Mr. Kim for their pledge to work toward peace and pray that these efforts are just a start to building a more peaceful and just world.
Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus, and the example of Saints Francis and Clare, the Franciscan Action Network (FAN) is a collective Franciscan voice seeking to transform United States public policy related to peace making, care for creation, poverty, and human rights.
