Franciscans call on Senate to support SJ Res. 19 and remove roadblock of outside money from politics

Support of the issue from a majority of Americans gives the Senate a chance to come to bipartisan consensus and do the work of the people

Washington, D.C.— For the past year, FAN has led an interfaith coalition working on the issue of money in politics, trying to get to the root of the inability of Congress to pass meaningful legislation on immigration, the environment, or gun violence prevention.

As the Senate prepares to vote on the Udall Amendment, SJ Res. 19 which would help remove the roadblock of unlimited, anonymous campaign contributions instituted by the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, the Franciscan Action Network urges all Senators to vote yes on the resolution.

Each American’s vote should count equally, but unchecked and unlimited campaign contributions drown out the voices of the many in favor of the few. A majority of Americans recognize this as a problem that our country faces. Therefore FAN calls on the Senate to pass SJ Res. 19 in order to ensure that each American has their voice heard equally and Congress can more easily carry out the work of the people as they’ve been elected to do.

Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus, and the example of Saints Francis and Clare, the Franciscan Action Network (FAN) is a collective Franciscan voice seeking to transform United States public policy related to peace making, care for creation, poverty, and human rights.
