Press Release: The Decision to Replace Clean Power Plan is contrary to Franciscan Values and Spirituality
Washington, D.C.-- The Trump Administration's latest attack on the environment through the planned replacement of the Clean Power Plan, goes against the moral teachings of all faiths. The New York Times estimates that this decision will result in an additional 1,400 premature deaths nationwide. This is inexcusable. It is clear this is an attempt to put profit before people and planet.
“There is no excuse for this recklessness that will lead to a lower quality of life for thousands of Americans, especially those in lower income communities where many older coal powered plants are housed. This is a deliberate decision by the Trump administration to once again target poor brown and black communities which will unilaterally lead to more deaths,” said Franciscan Action Network Executive Director Patrick Carolan. “Despite the continued setbacks, FAN will continue to follow the lead that Pope Francis set in Laudato Si and advocate for a cleaner environment which will benefit all of its inhabitants.”
According to the 2017 Draft Report to Congress on the Benefits and Costs of Federal Regulations and Agency Compliance with the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act shows that benefits of regulations far exceed costs. For the ten year period Sept. 30, 2006-Sept. 30, 2016, benefits of major federal regulations ranged from $219-$695 billion, while costs ranged from $59-$88 billion. Clean Air rules by the EPA had benefits ranging from $182-$684 billion and costs ranging from $50 to $60 billion. These numbers show that Clean Air rules were among those with the best cost/benefit ratio. The EPA’s own technical analysis of this new proposal shows a section labeled “foregone” climate and health benefits. The health of the climate and multitudes of Americans does not seem to be a high priority for this administration.
As the EPA continues to carry out President Trump’s destructive agenda, risking lives for profit, we urge all people of faith and good to remain vigilant and united in our work against the continued calculated destruction of our Common Home. The health and well being of thousands of Americans and the future of our Earth depends on it.
