The following is a statement developed by all the Fast for Families organizations of the moral obligation to pass Immigration Reform.
The struggles for freedom and dignity led by Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez showed the world that faithful sacrifice and courageous nonviolent can break the bonds of injustice. We now humbly attempt to follow their example and the teachings of Scripture to align our own hearts with the heart of God, who desires justice for all immigrants, including the 11 million undocumented immigrant brothers and sisters within our borders. Our faith requires nothing less.
Today we vow to fast every Wednesday during the season of Lent as an act of witness to the fierce moral urgency of protecting immigrant families that are torn apart every day. Nothing less than comprehensive reform of our unconscionably inhumane system will pass the moral test.
As the House of Representative makes halting gestures toward passing critical reforms and openly suggests waiting even longer, the time for patience has passed. Just as the leaders of history’s great movements for justice were told to wait and not push too hard, we are told to be patient even as families are destroyed by deportations, students are trapped in limbo and workers are brutally exploited.
And so we fast and pray as an act of faith and as a demonstration that we will accept neither excuses nor delays. We will continue our witness until the bonds of families are no longer broken and citizenship is no longer a fleeting dream for 11 million aspiring Americans. Sign up today to participate in the fast.
