This week Washington has been hosting the National Migration Conference, where people come from all over the country to learn about both immigration and the current crisis at the border where hundreds of unaccompanied minors have been crossing every day. FAN’s own Sr. Marie Lucey, Director of Advocacy and Member Relations has been in attendance and participating in lobby visits at the Capitol. Last week FAN signed on to a letter from a coalition of 200 organizations (see below) urging the administration to stop sending the minors back to the violence they are fleeing.
After an extensive interview with Bloomberg news, FAN Executive Director, Patrick Carolan was quoted in an article about the crisis and what is being done to address it.
“Closing our borders is not a way to protect these children,” said Patrick Carolan, executive director of the Franciscan Action Network, in a phone interview. “If we close our borders or ship them back they’re going to just die.”
This topic draws strong feelings from all sides. A personal reflection by FAN's Director of Campaigns, Jason Miller is a good example. It had hundreds of shares on Facebook and 15,000 web hits on FAN’s blog, “Acting Franciscan.”
FAN is going to continue our work in advocating for these children and assisting them in any way we can. As Christians, as Franciscans, as Human beings, we are morally obligated to do so.
