FAN Statement to House of Representatives on Impending Immigration Legislation

Franciscan Action Network (FAN) urges all members of Congress to vote against all amendments to the DHS Appropriations Bill which would harm immigrant families by undoing the President’s recent actions on immigration.  Recently proposed amendments and H.R. 191 sponsored by Representative Aderholt (R-AL-4) would hurt immigrants already living in the United States, as well as those seeking protection from harm, including children.  These proposals do nothing to fix our acknowledged broken immigration system and serve only to move our county backwards.

Such legislation would undo the well- established DACA program and newly announced DAPA program as well as reinstate the failed Secure Communities program that has reduced community safety by damaging trust between the public and law enforcement.  The executive actions creating DACA and DAPS and replacing SCOM are temporary and do not provide the needed pathway to permanent status or citizenship, but are steps welcomed by the faith community to keep families together and allow our valued community members to live and work legally in this country.

As a long-time advocate for victims of human trafficking, FAN also strongly opposes sections of H.R. 191 and similar legislation that would reverse life-saving anti-trafficking programs and return unaccompanied children to very dangerous situations in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.  We urge Congress to affirm protections in the TVPRA and support the safety of children and all individuals fleeing from exploitation or persecution.

Rather than support legislation that sets our country backwards on human rights by harming immigrant families and refugees, FAN urges Congress to support the temporary relief enacted by the President and work on fixing our hapless immigration system in a way that is humane and just.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops also released a statement, listed below. We invite you to read it.
