FAN at Fast 4 Families

On November 12, 2013, faith, immigrant rights and labor leaders announced the launch of “Fast for Families: A Call for Immigration Reform and Citizenship,” taking place on the National Mall, steps away from the Capitol. Franciscans, faith leaders and immigrant members of the community will fast every day and night, abstaining from all food—except water—to move the hearts and compassion of members of Congress to pass immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

At the start of the event, our own Executive Director,  Patrick Carolan was in the tent for the first 24 hours. Following him, was one of our board members, Fr. Jacek Orzechowski as well as our Board President, Sr. Margaret Magee over the weekend. The stories and images coming out of the tent have been very inspiring to all who have been moved to action.  Sr. Magee wrote of her experience, "Our Franciscan presence and call for respect and equality for all people is a message of hope."

Many have joined the fast and some have been moved to jot down their thoughts on a Fast4Families blog. We encourage you to follow their stories, join in praying for fair immigration reform, and act on your faith by joining in the fast.  Let us know when and where you will be fasting, take a photo and send it to us. Together, we can move the hearts of the Members of Congress to address the moral crisis of an immigration system that is broken.
