Instruments of Peace: A Franciscan Peacemaking Program
As followers of Christ, we are called to be peacemakers. Jesus even refers to these followers as “blessed sons and daughters.” (Mt 5:9) As Franciscans following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi in his example of following Christ, we in particular have a special charge to be “channels of peace,” to learn to be peacemakers.
We can’t satisfy this requirement of our faith simply by willing ourselves to be peacemakers. Obviously, being a peacemaker is not an easy task in our world; if it were, then we already would have peace. However, through prayer, study, the fostering of community and God’s promise to be with us, we can be peacemakers in our families, friaries, convents, fraternities, church and world.
Instruments of Peace: A Franciscan Peacemaking Program is a 10-session, intense immersion experience and spiritual journey for a small group (6-15 persons) to become Franciscan Peacemakers. It includes a process with prayer, stories, interactive exercises, sharing, music, readings, journaling, and action items. Instruments of Peace will be available starting September 1, 2009 and we are currently taking pre-orders. The program is being offered as a result of a collaboration between the Franciscan Action Network, and Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service.
