Many FAN members recently have approached the Action Center Staff for guidance on the government rules concerning health care workers and the conscience protection clause. As the inquiries involve an area outside of our immediate concentration and expertise. we consulted the Catholic Health Association of the U.S. for input. Many of our Franciscan hospitals are members of this organization and, since they are most engaged in this issue, we rely on their guidance. Here is a link to their statement and position:http://www.chausa.org/Pub/MainNav/ourcommitments/Ethics/conscienceclausestmt.htm The support of all life is of highest importance for the work of FAN. We are committed to action to stop and, at the least, reduce the number of abortions and other threats to life. When FAN members have the opportunity to participate in legislative action to help move towards these goals, we will do so. In reviewing the current legislative schedule, we do not see any activity that would help our world realize this hope for an end to abortions.
The U.S. Catholic Bishops have recently joined the current discussion on the rescinding of the 2008 Conscience Protection Rule. With the dialog, the Bishops see an opportunity to teach and act in support of life. We are appreciative of our Bishop’s efforts in this area.
